Ideal as a destination for both environmental education and outdoor recreation, Sheldon Lake State Park takes up 2,800 acres, 1,200 of which are water. While visitors are welcome to boat around the lake and fish, either from a watercraft or from one of the piers overlooking the lake, the Environmental Learning Center offers a more educational look at the natural habitats of the region. A short hiking trail passes by 28 maintained ponds, featuring animals like alligators and fish, and there are often educational programs for children and families. The park is located almost due northeast of the city, about 17 miles outside of downtown.
Park open daily dawn - dusk; Environmental Learning Center open Mon. - Fri. 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Sat. - Sun. 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Free entry. Activity rates vary, check website for details.
