Created by Jeff McKissack, a local man who believed that oranges were the epitome of all foods and that hard work and a good diet resulted in a long life, the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art is centered around his unique, bizarre architectural and artistic creation, built out of basic materials and found objects. Covering some 3,000 square feet of land, the maze-like construct features balconies and ponds, paths and statuettes discarded as junk. The center built around the art piece focuses on providing arts education and enrichment programs to the community, especially children and teens. It is located on the southeastern side of the city, about a mile from the University of Houston-Central campus.
