The house that is central to the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens was built between 1927 and 1928, incorporating architectural details from the English Georgian style of the 1700s and New Orleans' Spanish Creole designs. Now run by The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the home contains pieces of American decorative art created between 1620 and 1870, offering a glimpse into the everyday lives of the area's inhabitants as the country moved from a British colony to a full-fledged nation. Surrounding the home, lovely gardens and sculptural pieces reflect the designs and plants once cultivated by the home's owner, Miss Ima Hogg. Open for guided tours or self-guided audio experiences, it is located a few miles west of downtown, past Buffalo Bayou Park and close to the sprawling Memorial Park.
