McClain Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of important sculpture and drawings from the estate of George Segal (b. 1924 d. 2000). The exhibition includes bronze and plaster figurative casts, plaster still-life casts, and drawings from the 1970s through the 1990s.
Known for his iconic live casting technique, Segal created his sculpture style in the early 60s through experimenting with dry plaster bandages and assembling life-size figurative casts, using many close friends and family members as models. While Segal was initially characterized as part of the Pop Art movement, his distinctive and expressive style clearly separated him from the group. Hisfigurative work explored themes in the lives of ordinary people and hoped to extended past the art world to encompass a living American history through human values and political dialogues.
Segals work is included in more than sixty international public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art; Art Institute of Chicago; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; National Gallery of Art; Centre Georges Pompidou, Musee National dArt Moderne, France; Stedelijk Museum; Staatsgalerie Moderner Kunst Germany; Kunsthaus, Switzerland; Mann Auditorium, Isreal; and Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan.

As gallerists and dealers, McClain Gallery is committed to the acquisition, representation and exhibition of outstanding 20th Century and Contemporary art.
Based in Houston, the gallery maintains an internationalist point of view, exhibiting the works of New York, European, Asian and Texas artists; in a full range of media including painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography and conceptual installations.
In addition to the promotion of the work of our stable of artists, we actively advise and help private individuals, corporations and institutions in acquiring a specific work or organizing a comprehensive program of collecting. On an annual basis, the gallery organizes survey exhibitions of significant current themes in contemporary art, providing the community in many cases, its first view of cutting edge work from New York and abroad. Educating both the new collector, as well as the sophisticated collector, is a vital part of our gallery program.
