A Church that loves God and all His People

Posted by arw815 on 10/20/2008

I have attended and been a member of Wheeler Avenue Baptist church since 2000 when I moved to Houston. I have been blessed in so many ways, that words can't began to describe. Through the ministry of Rev. Lawson and Rev. Crosby, I have learned more about God than I have my entire life. I thank God that I am able to be refreshed, renewed each time I enter and leave the church.. God directed me to Houston, and I've found loving and supportive friends who I consider family now. There are varies ministry to get involved in, to allow you to use the talents that God has given. I encourage anyone looking for a church home, looking for a place to be ministered to..Visit WABC..

WABC...Where We Worship Jesus Christ and Minister to the Total Person!

I have never been more appalled by such foolish comments spouted by someone whose walk with the Lord is so obviously underdeveloped than what I read by Private58. While he/she is certainly entitled to his/her opinion, I take serious issue with opinions passed off as facts and left up to unsuspecting persons looking for houses of worship to decipher. Please allow me to share a more accurate description of the true Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church--for which I've been a proud member for the last 26 years. She is a church with a 47 year history and just two Pastors; the Rev. William A. Lawson, who retired in 2004, and his successor, the Rev. Dr. Marcus D. Cosby. While both are truly awesome men of God, their preaching & leadership styles are very different. Lawson is much more reserved, Cosby is much more charismatic, however, both are PHENOMENAL in their areas of spiritual gifts & it is clear both were ordained by God to preach His Word and lead His people. The 7:30am svc. is mainly (*but not exclusively) made up of members (55+). The 10:30am svc. is mainly (*) made up of members 30-50 years old & the 12:30 svc. is mainly (*) made up of college students. Each worship service has a God-directed balance of persons of all ages & stages of life to ensure the Holy Spirit is welcomed & given license to have His way! Wheeler is a growing church; there are roughly 7,000 members on the roll & well over half of them show up every Sunday. With growth come growing pains. Yes, parking is limited. Yes, if you get there at 10:15 for 10:30 svc. you will be directed to an overflow room & yes we have members who drive Lexus?s...(& Cadillac?s, & Toyota's, & Geo Metro's & some who don't own a car at all!) Bottom line, we are a group of committed Christians who love the Lord & do our best to show the love of Jesus Christ to all who step foot on our campus. The worst church in Houston

If you want to visit this church fine, but I would most certainly not join. I was a member of this church for 17 years but in the last two years my attendance has decreased. The Pastor Emeritus (a wonderful individual) founded this church and it was a decent congregation up until he retired about 4 years ago. Many members who had been there for years left and now the church is consumed with young people only attending church to "get over" on older members who don't have anything either. The members and Ministers (with the exception of the Pastor Emeritus and Minister of Music) have no respect for anyone but themselves. If you do not drive a Lexus or a member of a Black Greek-lettered organization or have money you can forget about receiving any respect from anyone here. I happened to drive a Toyota Camry but I have a VERY nice 4 bedroom home in Missouri City, Texas and work as a Financial Aid Advisor at one of the local Universities and they treated me and my family like trash. The church is a complete and total charade filled with selfish arrogant people who either do not work or have low paying jobs. There is more to this church than anyone can imagine. All I can say is please stay away and find another church. If you are willing to give a Catholic church a chance try St. Mary's which is an African American Catholic Church not too far from Wheeler or visit Antioch Church which is located in Downtown Houston. These churches tend to be less superficial and focus more on the Lord than materialistic items. Update: Oh I forgot to add that the controversial preacher Jeremiah Wright (Barack Obama's former pastor) has been visiting the church every year for the last 20 years. He recently made a visit on August 31, 2008.
